Milia
Milia, also known as “milk spots” or “grit spots,” are small white or yellowish cysts that primarily appear on the face. Though not a skin disease, they are often considered cosmetically bothersome.

What are Milia?
Milia are tiny white or yellowish cysts that form under the skin when dead skin cells become trapped in small skin pockets or when pores are clogged. They are entirely harmless and painless.
The exact cause of milia formation remains unclear. However, contributing factors include skin injuries, sunburn, hormonal changes, and certain skincare products. In newborns, milia are often a natural part of skin development.
Are certain people more affected by milia?
Milia can appear in people of any age but are most common in infants and young adults. They are typically located on the face, especially around the eyes and cheeks.
Can milia be prevented?
Gentle exfoliation can help improve the overall skin texture and may prevent milia. Skin should also be protected from excessive sun exposure, which can contribute to milia formation. Additionally, non-comedogenic skincare products that do not clog pores should be chosen.
How can milia be removed?
In many cases, milia disappear on their own and do not require treatment. Depending on the patient’s age, the number of milia, and their location, treatment can be performed by a dermatologist or a cosmetician to prevent infection and scarring.
If there are only a few milia on the cheeks, a "21. Cosmetic" appointment with one of our experienced cosmeticians is recommended. During a soothing cosmetic treatment, bothersome milia can be removed.
For babies or young children, or if the milia are located close to the eye, an appointment with one of our dermatologists should be scheduled. For this, please book "02. General Dermatology."
How many appointments are necessary?
Usually, a single treatment is sufficient for just a few milia. For numerous milia that may require laser treatment, an initial consultation and a follow-up treatment appointment will be necessary.
What are the expected costs?
The consultation fee is EUR 150, and the removal of a few milia during the initial appointment costs EUR 25-50. For more extensive treatments, the cost will be determined at the initial consultation.
Can milia reoccur?
New milia may appear over time. The factors mentioned above, along with personal predisposition, play a key role in this.
